Understanding Addictions

Addictions eventually catch up with you and change your life in such a way that you will have to face the fact that you need help. Recovering from addictions usually happens once you have hit the bottom and finally realize that you need help from outside sources so that you can lead a life that is addiction free. There are many types of addictions that will have a devastating affect on your life. Addictions, and recovery from them, require that you actively seek help from a source other than yourself. You may want to start by consulting with your family doctor or with an addictions counselor. This is a good place to start since it will be important to access both your emotional and your physical behavior as they are related to your addictions and your substance abuse. You and your doctor will need to decide what is going to work best for you in order that you stop using your drug of choice. It won t matter what your type of addiction is since all addictions require the same amount of professional help and support. There are several different types of addictions that you may or may not already be aware of. Addictions include: alcohol abuse...

Autism: An Incurable Developmental Disability

Developmental disability is an expression employed to refer to serious life long impairment that substantially reduces one or more of one s life functions. Such disabilities might adversely affect one s ability to make an independent living, ability to learn or move or express. One of such disabilities is Autism. If a child is autistic the signs are visible within three years of his or her birth. How pronounced are the symptoms varies from case to case and so the affect of the impairment on one s daily activities. They have problems expressing themselves through speech and cannot speak well in most of the cases. An autistic child does not like playing with other children. He or she would rather find a small corner for himself or herself and confine to playing his or her own set of games that might appear very strange to any onlooker. They are very sensitive to light and loud noises and react to being subjected to them. At times, they might behave as though they were deaf. They would not even respond to their own names. On other occasions, you name them and the head turns. It is primarily because on the occasions they do not respond, they are...

Blepharospasm: That Blinkety-blink Movement Disorder

The range of ailments falling under the umbrella-term of abnormal involuntary movement disorders is diverse and includes conditions as different from each other as Parkinson s disease, restless legs syndrome and blepharospasm. Cases of blepharospasm, like those of other movement disorders, often go unrecognized or are blamed on other causes. The term blepharospasm is the sum of its parts. Blepharon is Greek for eyelid and spasm means excessive muscular contractions. In blepharospasm the eyes blink excessively. The blinking can be too frequent, too sustained, or both. The distinction between normal blinking and excessive blinking is not exact. A practical method for sorting out cases relies on the answers to two questions: Does the blinking cause distress. Does the blinking interfere with usual activities. Blepharospasm can occur alone or in combination with other involuntary movements. When paired with involuntary movements of the lower face -- like puckering of the lips or grimacing expressions -- the problem is collectively known as Meige syndrome, named for Dr. Henri Meige who described the condition in 1904. Blepharospasm and Meige...

Are You Persevering Or Enduring?

Why try to make a distinction between perseverance and endurance. In both perseverance and endurance, we may struggle at times, feel fear of failure or rejection, or worry that we are not worthy of what we long for. So the distinction between perseverance and endurance can easily get blurred. But perseverance and endurance take us down different roads so they are worth distinguishing. Endurance will lead us to a dead end whereas perseverance, although it may take us down a long and meandering path, offers up surprises, serendipity, and synchronicity. Endurance can be identified by its symptoms anxiety, boredom, self-criticism, addiction, low energy, avoidance, depression, lethargy to name just a few that I discuss in Enough Is Enough. When we habitually wake up in the morning dreading that today will be a repeat of yesterday and the day before and the day before that, we are enduring, not persevering. The bad news is that endurance sneaks up on us. We don t know we re in endurance until we re pretty miserable. The good news is that, once we recognize the sources of our endurance, we can say Enough is enough. and begin leading a more...

Disability Commissions: Where Disabled Are Heard And Cared For

State is dutybound to protect the rights of its citizens and promote their welfare ensuring that on no occasion they are discriminated against for anything adverse that happens to them without their having played any role in it. Disability is one such thing that happens to people and they are many a time considered to be unequals for reasons other than merit and ability. So long as a person can perform his work as well as anyone else, he or she should not be discriminated against simply because he suffers from some kind of impairment. In order to carry out its social responsibility towards the disabled effectively, the governments all over have established the institutions, generally called commissions , to look after the welfare of the disabled and ensure that they are not discriminated against in any way. A disabled person may approach these body in case he or she needs any information or advice regarding anything that adversely affects him or his interests directly or indirectly. The body also provides all the assistance that the education providers for the disabled need. Not just that, if a disabled has been discriminated against, he can...
